A daily pet care checklist for cats and dogs

Updated October 3, 2026 · By the Patikoko team

Short answer

What should a daily pet care checklist include?

A daily checklist covers meals, fresh water, exercise or play, toilet needs (a walk or a clean litter box), a quick look at how your pet is behaving, and any medicine your vet has prescribed. Adjust the details to your pet’s age, size and your vet’s advice.

For dogs

  • Meals at your usual times, measured the same way each time
  • Fresh water, refilled and the bowl rinsed
  • Walks and toilet breaks, plus time to sniff and play
  • Medicine, only as your vet has instructed
  • A quick check: appetite, energy and anything that seems different today

For cats

  • Meals at your usual times
  • Fresh water, refilled and the bowl rinsed
  • Litter box scooped, and fully cleaned on a regular schedule
  • Play and attention
  • Medicine, only as your vet has instructed
  • A quick check: appetite, litter habits and behavior

Weekly extras

Some jobs do not need doing every day: grooming, a deeper clean of bowls and bedding, and checking how much food and litter you have left.

Make the checklist work for more than one person

A checklist on the fridge only tells you what to do, not what has already been done. If several people look after your pet, you need to see each item ticked off by whoever did it, so the next person does not repeat it.

Note: If you notice something unusual in your pet’s behavior, appetite or toilet habits, contact your vet. This checklist is not veterinary advice.

How Patikoko helps

In Patikoko you turn this checklist into routines for food, water, walks, litter and medicine, with reminders at the times you choose. Everyone in the household sees what has been logged, and you can mark a task done straight from the notification.
