Short answer
How do you arrange pet care while you are away?
Decide who will look after your pet well before you leave, write down the routine, stock enough food and supplies, give the sitter your vet’s details, and agree how you will get updates. Start planning a few weeks ahead for longer trips.
1. Choose who will care for your pet
Options include a trusted friend or family member, a professional sitter who visits or stays at your home, or a boarding facility. Pick what suits your pet’s temperament and needs. Some pets do best in their own home; others cope well with boarding.
2. Write down the routine
Meals, walks, toilet needs, play, medicine and any quirks. The more specific you are, the less your pet’s routine changes while you are away. See our pet sitter notes template.
3. Stock up
Leave more food, litter and other supplies than you expect to need, so a delay does not become a problem.
4. Check the practical details
- Your pet’s ID tag and any microchip details are up to date
- Your sitter has your vet’s details and a way to reach you
- Vaccinations or other requirements for boarding are checked ahead of time with your vet
5. Agree on updates
Decide how often you want to hear from your sitter and how, so you can relax without being in the dark.
